A Career as a Fitness Tutor

As a Fitness Tutor you are likely to work for fitness industry training provider or college teaching and assessing their vocational qualifications. You will meet all kinds of people from different walks of life- because the health and fitness industry is such an exciting and rewarding vocation, there is never a shortage of people wanting to get involved at some level.

The exact nature of your work will largely depend on the type of training provider you are working for. Some providers deliver their training courses directly which means you will likely work Monday-Friday teaching and supporting students throughout the duration of their whole course. Other providers use blended learning- this simply means that students undertake a period of distance-learning followed by a shorter and more intense training workshop. Invariably the Fitness Tutor will be involved in both formative and summative assessments to ensure that their students possess the necessary skills and qualities to successfully achieve their qualification.

Because many training providers deliver their courses nationally, some providers may expect their fitness tutors to travel; expenses and accommodation are usually provided however the rates and extent of such benefits varies immensely from one provider to the next.

It is perhaps worth noting at this stage that Training Providers often impose an ‘Exclusivity of Service’ clause into the Tutor’s contract to prevent them from working with rival providers.

Requirements of a Fitness Tutor:

Fitness tutors are required to possess a technical qualification at a level above what they plan to teach. If for example you were planning on teaching a ‘Level 2 Fitness Instructor’ qualification, you would be expected to hold as a minimum a Level 3 qualification in the same discipline. You would also be required to hold a formal teaching and assessing qualification, examples of these include:

Level 3 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector

Level 3 Assessing in the Active Leisure Sector*

*Fitness tutors assessing NVQ’s would most certainly need the assessing qualification in addition to the teaching certificate. If however they were only going to be teaching ‘Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQ’s), they would be permitted to practice with only the teaching certificate.

Fitness Tutor's Pay:

Pay varies dramatically between training providers and qualification. Fitness tutors who possess the above teaching and assessing qualification can typically expect to earn £80.00-£130.00 per day. Tutors who hold higher level teaching and assessing qualifications (CertEd or PGCE) can expect to earn between £100-£150.00 per day. Salaried fitness tutors typically earn £18,000-£25,000 depending on the training organisation.
