Gym Instructor

OVERVIEW
A career as a Gym Instructor is one of great variety and reward. You will have a great opportunity to meet a wide range of people and from different walks of life.

You will be required to deliver gym inductions, plan personal exercise programmes and some employers may request that you to take group exercise sessions (although you should possess and ‘Exercise to Music’ qualification to perform this duty).

Typically the position of a ‘Gym Instructor’ is used as a stepping stone towards Personal Training but not in all cases. Many Gym Instructors get enough satisfaction from their work and don’t feel the need to progress to becoming a Personal Trainer.

REQUIREMENTS
In order to practice as a Gym Instructor you must hold as a minimum a ‘Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction’. This can be completed on a vocational training course or in the workplace (gym) as an NVQ.

Whilst it is not compulsory that all Gym Instructors hold a first aid qualification, it is regarded as good practice and something that should be seriously considered by all practicing Gym Instructors.

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) has been set up to help safeguard the interests of people who are using the services of Fitness Instructors. Fitness Instructors are required to demonstrate their commitment to ‘Continued Professional Development’ (CPD) by completing regular and recognised training. A failure to do so will result in an exclusion from the Register. All of the training courses provided by Innervate Training are approved by REPs.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Employment opportunities for Gym Instructors are vast, potential employers include:

  • Private health clubs
  • Local authorities (leisure centres)
  • Schools and colleges
  • Cruise ships
  • Holiday resorts
  • HM Prison Service

PAY AND OPPORTUNITIES
Salaries vary considerably and can range between £12,000-£20,000 depending on qualification, experience, and your employer. Most fitness facilities have the opportunity for promotion to supervisor or management roles; these promotions will significantly boost your earning potential.

Many Gym Instructors go on to complete additional Personal Trainer Qualifications and as such are able to charge more for their services.
